How do you calculate gematria

Gematria is an ancient form of numerology and a practice of assigning numerical values to words or phrases in order to gain insight into their meanings. The ancient Hebrews are thought to have been the first to develop gematria as a tool for making prophecy and divination. Today, gematria is still commonly used in many religious and occult traditions, particularly in Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

To calculate gematria, one must first assign a numerical value to each letter in the alphabet. For example, in many variants of Gematria, the Hebrew alphabet assigns each letter the following value: Aleph=1, Bet=2, Gimel=3, Dalet=4, etc. (The English alphabet does not use traditional Arabic or Hebrew script but one could easily assign English letters similar numerical values for use in Gematria). Once numerical values are assigned to all letters then it becomes simple math when using Gematria to determine the numeric value of a word—simply add up all numerical values assigned to each letter of a given word or phrase.

For example, the word "love" (in English) would have numerical values equal to 12: L(12) + O(15) + V(22) + E(5) = 54

Once you know the numeric value of a word then you can use it with other words and phrases with similar numbers or add/subtract/multiply/divide your results to further explore potential meaning or significance within any given text.

Another popular variant of Gematria is known as Kabbalah Numerology which adds an additional layer of complexity by attaching certain metaphysical interpretations to certain combinations of numbers. For example, according to Kabbalah Numerology 3+6 = 9 is linked energetically with friendship, sociability and expansiveness whereas 4+7 = 11 is more closely associated with pragmatism, mastery and foresight.
